Re-use Grodan in planters

Don’t throw away your old Grodan! Save it to use as a great potting medium. Just rip up your old Grodan and put it in any planter on your patio, in your house or anywhere in your garden. For an easy instant plant bed in your garden, consider filling a large cloth pot such as those made by Smart Pot®. You can see below step-by-step how we made an instant plant bed with old Grodan and a large Smart Pot.

  1. Purchase a large Smart Pot. Here we use a 4 ft. diameter pot that is 2 ft. in height.
  2. Buy some healthy plants at your local garden center. Or, better yet grow them yourself in some Grodan. Plants growing in any type of medium transplant well into old Grodan.

  1. Collect previously used Grodan and tear it into small pieces. Then, wet it down if it has dried. Fill the cloth pot until it is a couple of inches from the rim.
  2. Transplant your plants into the old Grodan. You can add mulch on top of the Grodan to retain moisture. Occasionally add in some fertilizer. Hand water the plants at least once per week, maybe more depending on the maturity of the plants and your climate. To save time watering, consider setting up a timed soaker hose.
