Hortifair debate confirms Grodan stone wool substrates are more sustainable than coco peat

November 16, 2011

During a recent debate with coco peat substrate supplier, van der Knaap, at Hortifair, Grodan successfully claimed its position as the most sustainable substrate supplier within high-tech horticulture. This conclusion was based on studies that showed Grodan allows for the use of minimum input materials to generate maximum output and it has the least impact on the environment.

During the debate, both parties referred to the importance of a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), which is an extensive method for measuring the total environmental impact of a product during its entire life cycle. During the debate it was revealed by an independent third party that Grodan has the lowest LCA (impact) score. This confirms that Grodan stone wool substrates are the most sustainable hydroponic growing media on the market. This outside validation, paired with our Eco-Label license, makes Grodan the best choice for the environmentally-conscious grower.  The Eco-label is the European version of OMRI, but involves a more intensive cradle-to-grave (life cycle) examination rather than just a material review as required by OMRI.

Hortifair, the largest international trade show for horticulture technology, was held November 1-4 in Amsterdam.  It drew nearly 600 exhibitors and 30,000 attendees this year.
