Cannabis lighting continues to evolve beyond simply increasing intensity above the canopy. As growers look for new ways to improve flower quality, uniformity and efficiency, under-canopy lighting and more strategic approaches to spectrum management are becoming a larger part of the conversation.
In Episode 34 of the GroShow Podcast, Taylor Kirk returns to the show alongside Casey Rivero and Brian Poel from Fluence to discuss how cannabis lighting has evolved and what Fluence has learned through its latest research.
Taylor first joined the GroShow in Episode 15, where we explored many of the foundations of modern cannabis lighting, including the transition from HPS to LED, spectrum, intensity, intercanopy lighting and photobleaching. This episode builds on that conversation with a closer look at where lighting strategies have moved since then.
The discussion explores how under-canopy lighting can improve lower-flower size, firmness and uniformity, while also changing how growers think about pruning, lollipopping, labor and productive canopy area. The team also looks at how additional usable light can increase crop demand, leading to faster dry-backs, greater water use and the need to closely monitor irrigation and root-zone conditions.
Fluence also shares insights from its latest photobleaching research, including cultivar sensitivity, red-light thresholds and how those findings contributed to the Red Sandwich concept. From there, the conversation turns to dynamic spectrum control and the RAPTR 2 T48, along with how growers can apply lighting strategies with greater energy efficiency.
Throughout the episode, one theme remains consistent: lighting, irrigation, climate, nutrition and the root zone need to work together as one connected cultivation system.
